Fun, Interesting, and Cheap things to do with used wine corks
Cork Trivet
What you will need to make a 7 inch cork trivet:
Take the metal 7-inch lid of a round cookie tin with low, straight sides. Put one cork in the center. Place 6 corks around the center cork (1st circle). Place 12 corks around the 6 corks (2nd circle). Place 18 corks around the 12 corks (3rd circle), and place 24 corks around the 18 corks (4th circle). Alternate the tops and bottoms of the corks. This will allow the corks to be packed as tightly as possible. With the wire and a pair of pliers, place the wire around the middle of the corks and twist tightly to hold the corks in place. Cut off the excess wire and bend the cut ends toward the corks. This cork trivet works great for hot dishes.
Cork Key Ring
What you will need to make a cork key ring:
Take one wine cork and drill a hole vertically from the top to the bottom. Tie the cut ends of the string together with a square knot. Loop through the key ring. Adjust so the knot is in the middle of one side. With a yarn needle and the string, place the folded end through the eye of the needle and thread through the cork, making sure the cut ends are hidden in the cork. Tie a knot in the top of the string so the cork cannot slip over. Tie another knot at the base of the cork. This makes a great key ring for boaters.
